Jobey Wilson

Jobey Wilson's charismatic style of tuba playing has entertained audiences all over the United States, Canada, France and Japan. Born and raised on a golf course in Broken Arrow, OK, this "Sooner's" performance career actually began while only 6-years-old on the Southwestern PGA Jr. Tour. By the age of 12, he was touring nationally competing on the American Jr. Golf Association Tour (AJGA), but retired his clubs when he was 18 to pursue his new love of music. After four crucial years of tutelage with Oklahoma City Philharmonic tubist Ted L. Cox, Jobey completed his Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Oklahoma and moved to Boston to refine his skills with the legendary Chester Schmitz of the Boston Symphony and Boston POPS Orchestras. In 2001, Wilson earned a Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music and has since resided in Boston as a freelance performer and teacher. As an orchestral musician he has performed under the batons of Seiji Ozawa, Keith Lockhart, Michael Tilson Thomas, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, James Conlon, Roberto Abbado, Gunther Schuller & Murray Sidlin. In Massachusetts, Wilson currently holds the principal tuba positions with the Lexington Symphony, New Bedford Symphony, and the Atlantic Symphony. He has also performed with the Boston POPS, Boston Ballet, Boston Philharmonic, Albany Symphony (NY), Vermont Symphony, Portland Symphony (ME), New World Symphony (FL), Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, the Aspen Chamber Symphony (CO), and the Oklahoma City Philharmonic. Highly sought out as a chamber musician and ensemble coach, Wilson is a founding member of the Boston-based, international award-winning Triton Brass Quintet and has performed chamber recitals in the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, the Lyon Opera House in France, Tanglewood Music Center, and numerous schools, churches and concert halls all over the United States. As a soloist Jobey has commissioned and premiered numerous works for solo tuba, performed as a featured artist at the 2007 Northeast Regional Tuba & Euphonium Conference, and has appeared with many local community bands. Wilson is a faculty member of Boston College, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, the Atlantic Brass Quintet Seminar, and Artist-in-Residence at The Boston Conservatory.
