LEXINGTON SYMPHONY: FOR PATRIOTS' WEEKEND, A CONCERT OF HISTORIC PROPORTIONS

On Sunday, April 15th at 3:00pm at Cary Hall in Lexington, conductor Jonathan McPhee leads the Lexington Symphony in a performance of American, British and French music in honor of Lexington's historic heritage and Patriots' Day festivities. The ever-popular pre-concert talk by McPhee precedes this final concert of the season at 2:00pm.

For families seeking the right concert for introducing their kids to classical music, this is it. Some of classical music's most popular works are on offer: Sir Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations, the piece that made him famous, Leonard Bernstein's exciting, jazzy West Side Story Symphonic Dances and Ravel's Bolero, a sinuous tune that slowly intensifies to a breathtaking wall of sound.

The sheer size of the orchestra—an awesome 75 players for this event—will inspire young and old alike. Covering the orchestral spectrum, from piccolo to tuba with saxophone in between, multiple percussionists and lush strings, huge symphonic sound will fill the rafters of Cary Hall.

The Symphony's annual April concert is its signature event—a concert that connects to community. Featured guests have included the Lexington High School Madrigal Singers and the William Diamond Junior Fife and Drum Corps, and this year young Lexington artist Yuga Cohler performs a movement from the Vaughan Williams Oboe Concerto, Lexington High School Director of Bands Jeffrey Leonard joins the orchestra on saxophone, and Lexington High School senior string players from the Honors Orchestra play side-by-side with Lexington Symphony strings in the Bolero.

A Gala Reception and Silent Auction follows the concert from 5:30-7:30 at the Depot Building in Lexington Center. Entitled "Vive La Symphony," the event features sumptuous hors d'oeuvres from La Riviera Gourmet and fabulous silent auction gifts with an A&E theme, including vacation packages, gourmet dinners, Boston Ballet tickets (including VIP backstage tour of the Boston Ballet hosted by Music Director Jonathan McPhee), Boston Pops and more. Tickets $50 each, with proceeds to help fund Lexington Symphony outreach and concert performances.
