LEXINGTON SYMPHONY SEASON: ROMANTIC, CREATIVE, FUN
On Saturday, September 15th at 8:00pm at Cary Hall in Lexington, the Lexington Symphony presents the first concert of its season, performing Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony and Second Piano Concerto, with featured soloist Sergey Schepkin. A talk about the evening's program by Music Director Jonathan McPhee precedes the concert at 7:00pm.
Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, pianist Sergey Schepkin has won numerous awards and prizes including the Maestro Foundation Genius Grant. Termed "a romantic firebrand" by the New York Times, Schepkin enjoys playing the works of the Russian romantics, with Rachmaninoff a mainstay of that group, and has performed extensively in Russia, Asia and the US.
The Lexington Symphony presents the first of its "Sight and Sound" multimedia concert series-a collaborative project with the National Heritage Museum and Polaroid Corporation-in afternoon and evening performances on Saturday, November 3rd. Animal photos from the Polaroid Collections, synchronized to music by conductor Jonathan McPhee, will be shown on large screen accompanied by the orchestra in live performance. Selected photos will be available for viewing before the concert and during intermission in the National Heritage Museum's exhibit Fins, Wings and Other Such Things, which opens August 18th.
The second Sight and Sound concert will take place at the Museum on February 9th at 8:00pm and will feature international violin sensation Stefan Jackiw, who appeared with the Lexington Symphony two years ago in a free open rehearsal for area children and performs now as soloist with the New York Philharmonic and other major symphony orchestras. Jackiw will also be heard at the Symphony's February 10th afternoon Children's Workshop and Concert, a lively, interactive presentation that includes comic animal photos from the Polaroid Collections set to music - a creative adventure for all ages.
The season finale on Sunday, April 13, 2008 at Cary Hall will be an afternoon all-American program, perfect for families, with classical works linked to film, including Daugherty's Spaghetti Western with English horn soloist Robert Sheena of the Boston Symphony, and Duke Ellington's masterpiece Harlem, in a rarely-heard full-orchestra version.
The Lexington Symphony is committed to sharing the appreciation of classical music and building community through quality live performances. Music Director Jonathan McPhee is one of New England's leading musical figures and conducts orchestras throughout the US and abroad. His ever-popular pre-concert talks, one hour before each performance, are a staple of the Lexington Symphony season and provide compelling insights about the works to be performed.
Advance tickets for Lexington Symphony performances can be purchased on-line at www.lexingtonsymphony.org, at Wales Copy Center (1810 Mass Ave, Lexington Center), or by calling (781) 863-9581. Ticket prices are $30; seniors $25, students $15. Discounted season subscriptions are available.
