Tickets for the Lexington Sinfonietta's 2005-2006 season are now available. Following its successful 10th anniversary season, enjoyed by an ever-growing audience and sell-outs at the National Heritage Museum, the Sinfonietta will perform four Saturday night concerts in 2005-2006 at 8pm, with conductors' talks at 7pm. All concerts will take place at the National Heritage Museum in Lexington. Advance ticket purchase is recommended.
"The Lexington Sinfonietta has a new season full of exciting music and terrific soloists," says conductor Jonathan McPhee. It opens on September 24th with a program of works by Prokofiev, Mozart and Beethoven, led by McPhee. Prize-winning pianist Soomi Lee will perform a Mozart masterpiece, the Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. Ms. Lee made her New York debut in Carnegie Recital Hall at the age of 16, is now a frequent live guest pianist on WGBH in Boston, and has appeared as soloist with the Boston Pops, Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, Symphony by the Sea, and numerous other groups.
On November 5th, mezzo-soprano Gale Fuller will join the Sinfonietta and McPhee in the stunning "Folk Songs" by Luciano Berio. Ms. Fuller has performed with many opera companies and orchestras throughout the world, including the San Diego Opera, Boston Lyric Opera and the Tokyo Philharmonic, and has been described as "the sultriest voice in town" by the Boston Globe. Also on the program are two orchestral suites by Stravinsky and Robert Schumann's passionate "Spring" Symphony.
The February 11th concert introduces a new guest conductor, James Buswell, who has earned international renown and a Grammy nomination as a violinist and is now enjoying a flourishing conducting career. The Sinfonietta will present Mr. Buswell as both conductor and solo violinist-he will perform the Bach Concerto in D minor and will lead works by Schubert, Schoenberg, and Mozart.
On April 8th, conductor Jonathan McPhee will return to the podium for a performance of American music in honor of Lexington's historic heritage and Patriots Day celebrations, including a setting of Longfellow's famous poem, "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere," by the prize-winning composer Julian Wachner, narrated by David Rockefeller, Jr. Also on the program will be the Barber Violin Concerto, performed by dazzling violinist Jason Horowitz, and songs by Aaron Copland, performed by Robert Honeysucker, "one of Boston's best singers" (Boston Globe), and the Lexington High School Madrigal Singers.
In addition to its evening performances, the Sinfonietta will present a children's event on the afternoon of April 8th at the National Heritage Museum, including a musical interactive workshop for children and an abbreviated version of the evening's concert. The workshop will take place at 2:30, with concert at 4:00.
Conductor Jonathan McPhee is one of the leading musical figures in New England. As Music Director of the Boston Ballet, he has received extensive critical acclaim, and has conducted all of the major ballet orchestras of the world, as well as the San Francisco Symphony, the Annapolis Symphony, the Hague Philharmonic and the Boston Pops, among many others. The Lexington Sinfonietta, a 40-piece orchestra dedicated to exacting standards of performance, is proud to provide its audience the opportunity to hear McPhee's outstanding work in an accessible venue at accessible prices.
As summed up by conductor Jonathan McPhee, "This season offers familiar masterpieces, stimulating works rarely heard like Berio's Folk Songs, the best of our local soloists, and our kickoff of the town's Patriot's Day events with an all-American program featuring the tale of Paul Revere's famous ride and music by Samuel Barber and Aaron Copland. Enjoy an evening of great music in your own backyard and share the artistic riches of Lexington."
