… at Cary Hall you got outstanding Wagner. From the eight double basses’ grinding first E-flat, the Prelude to “Das Rheingold” burst into light, dancing, building to the release of the Rhinemaidens’ entrance. The orchestra was bright and vivid throughout, and McPhee offered an intensely dramatic reading of the score, with huge climaxes.
— Jeffrey Gantz, The Boston Globe (on the Symphony’s 2016 presentation of The Essential Ring, Part I)
…This orchestra is, in two words, ‘top notch;’ its playing is tight, crisp, and precise ... Everyone’s enthusiasm for the music-making is palpable, as is the audience’s attention and appreciation. This is classical music as it once was known in similar cities and towns across the nation, but which has, alas, disappeared from all too many of them. In Lexington, it is growing instead.
